Here we have a few snapshots from a #longshot project by our #cabling team that worked out very well. The goal was to connect 2 buildings separated by a 350ft asphalt parking area using #fiberoptic cable and an underground #conduit that had not been used since it was installed 20 years ago. First we completed a vacuum test by plugging in a #shopvac to one end of the conduit which brought suction to the other end – a good sign.

Then came what we will call the mouse attempt. We carved a piece of sponge to just fit the conduit and put some copper loops at each end to attach to #fishingline . Then we put the mouse into the conduit and ran the vacuum (no actual mice were harmed in the running of this cable!). The “mouse” started flying down the pipe a few feet per second (we wish we had video – it was very exciting). The fishing line wheel was mounted on an axle and was spinning freely. The mouse got 3/4 of the way and got stuck. We pulled it back and tried a few more times without luck in getting through to the other side.

So then we rented this big blue 600ft 1/4″ #ductrodder. It took significant elbow grease, but it made it through. Then our team was able to attach the armoured fiber optic cable to the end of the #rodder at the opposite end of the conduit, and pull the cable to where six strands of #commscope #om2 #multimode fiber would be terminated into a #patchpanel. Tested, labeled and patched into the #cisco switches at the #IDF and #MDF for a job well done!
